Networking Tips

1. When attending a networking event be sure to look your best! First impressions are lasting. Ensure that you are wearing, at minimum, business casual attire and that your high quality grooming skills are evident. Before entering a room or event, conduct the following etiquette checklist:

2. Have business cards handy – You may or may not have a permanent position, but it is always advisable to have a set of personal business cards. Using the cards is an easy way to share your information with others. In addition to your name, be sure to include your areas of expertise, phone number, e-mail, web site and/or your LinkedIN profile web address. Remember that when you get a business card be sure to give one in return. Note that there are web sites that offer free business cards (Vistaprint and others). Your sole expense is to pay for shipping and handling.

3. Follow-up – Take note of each person you met on the back of their respective business card and follow-up. Sending a quick e-mail noting you enjoyed meeting them and providing them with additional information on a subject you discussed together will keep you top-of-mind. Work to develop relationships almost the same way you would develop a friendship. However, you want to err on the side of less frequent interactions than you would with an everyday friend.
